Why we lead with the license number

Most painters in San Diego put “licensed and insured” on a website and stop there. The number is what matters. A license number is verifiable; the phrase “licensed and insured” is not.

Anyone bidding against us in California is supposed to have a CSLB license for any job over $500. If they won’t give you the number — or they hesitate, or they say “don’t worry about it” — that’s the answer. Look up our number at cslb.ca.gov before you talk to anyone else, then ask every other painter you talk to for theirs.

What CSLB #803527 covers

Classification

What our insurance actually covers

General liability

General liability covers property damage during the job — if our crew knocks something over, if a ladder accidentally damages a fixture, if paint gets where it shouldn’t. The policy is held with a licensed California carrier. We send a Certificate of Insurance to any client who asks before we start.

Workers’ compensation

Workers’ comp coverage applies to crew injuries during covered work. Hiring uninsured or improperly insured contractors may create potential liability exposure for property owners. Specific coverage details, certificates, and endorsements are available upon request for qualifying projects.

Additional insured for HOAs and property managers

For HOA and property management contracts, we routinely add the property owner, HOA, or property management company as an additional insured on the COI. The carrier handles the endorsement; we forward the COI before any work starts on-site.

How to verify any painter’s license

This applies to any California contractor, not just us. Three steps:

  1. Ask the painter for their CSLB license number.
  2. Go to cslb.ca.gov, click “Check a License,” and search by the number.
  3. On the license page, look at:
    • Status — should be “Active.” Other statuses (Expired, Suspended, Revoked) mean don’t hire.
    • Classification — for painting, should include C-33.
    • Bond — should be on file.
    • Complaint history — public record. A single old complaint isn’t disqualifying, but a pattern is a flag.

What to ask a painter who hesitates

If you ask a painter for their CSLB number and they hesitate, change the subject, or tell you their license is “through” another company, push:

  • What’s the entity name on the CSLB license? Does it match the name on the quote?
  • What’s the classification? Is it C-33 (painting) or something else (general contractor, handyman, drywall)?
  • Are they bonded?
  • Do they have current workers’ comp coverage? Will they send a COI before starting?

Licensed California painting contractors are typically able to provide license, classification, bond, insurance, and references on request.
